There is nothing quite like colour to add a little spice to your life and real soul to your surroundings. And yet it remains an area of design so many (professionals included) seem often to fear. There is a wealth of information about the psychology of colour, and how it is assumed to make us feel. But whilst our eyes and minds are capable of detecting many millions of subtle variations, these nuances of difference are as subjective to us as a personal memory of place, of a shared moment, of an association with loved ones, even a brand or a beautiful piece of art. Colour is affected not just by our own perceptions, but also by light and texture. |

THE FOUNDATIONS OF A PALETTE
There are so many ways to build the foundations of a successful palette. From the almost fool-proof mono coloured scheme to something altogether more daring. The way we see it, it is your space, so you should be the master of the way you want it to look. But there are a few tips, which we don’t like to call rules, to help you on your way. To create harmony and a wholly considered, but not contrived palette, try combining a tone on tone, layering of a similar colour throughout your space, from walls to floor, ceiling to soft furnishings. This means choosing your base colour, be that blues or greys for instance, and start to build various tonal forms of the same hue. The most calming of interiors sees a subtle difference between neutral and natural tones, giving an ethereal sense of peace and tranquillity, especially when combined with a skilful interplay of light. To add a little drama or spice into your soulful space, simply inject a complimentary accent. Proportion is key.

COLOURS INSPIRED BY THE LOVE OF HOME..
A designers’ palette might seem daunting sometimes, or even too elusive to know where to start. So we advise that the simplest technique is to take inspiration directly from your home. It might be a favourite picture, colours or textures from a rug, a beautiful linen tablecloth or an old antique or keepsake you have acquired over the years. The type of space, amount of light and function of the room will all have a bearing on the colours and balance of colours you plan to use. Choosing colours from your inspiration source, be they background colours, colours for focal points or accents, will help to coordinate and harmonise your space, bringing everything together in a considered way.

If you’re feeling creative or are one of those people who have a skilled way of combining colours and objects into a beautifully cohesive whole, then developing a mood board is always a very good way to start. Your reference becomes the pages of glossy magazines, Pinterest, Instagram or professional websites. Combining not just paint colours, but material swatches, different textures - all of these affect the final look. Perhaps the most skilled way of creating your palette of ideas is to take direct reference from nature, building a moodboard with images of trees and forests, observing the many tonal variations and shades nature has to offer. A little like an artist laying down colour before the masterpiece is even able to start. |
