BUYING GUIDES

FURNITURE

Since Scandibøx was founded by award winning designers, all of the products selected have been very carefully curated due to their quality,
craftsmanship and look.  But we recognise that it takes years of experience to have the full knowledge to be confident enough to order
products knowing they will a) fit in a room and b) work to create an overall concept.

The Scandibøx online store has therefore been put together 'defined by the way we live'  to help bring concepts and ideas together.
However, we feel we can go a step further and offer a few tips and guidelines to help give you the confidence
that what you are buying will work, bringing you years of pleasure.

   SOFAS + BENCHES

Your seating arrangement is the focus of a good living room. It should be conducive to conversation and relaxation and further the feeling of pleasant togetherness. This means that you will need chairs and sofas to suit different tastes and purposes. Here at Scandibøx we have selected a number of different types of sofa and hope to help you make the perfect choice. Whether you're collapsing into it at the end of the day or catching up on it over cups of tea with friends and family, the sofa takes centre stage of the seating arrangement within the home's most multi-functional room and which makes it the most multi-purpose piece of furniture you are ever likely to buy.

Choosing a sofa is a big decision, so there are a number of aspects to consider such as style, size, fabric, filling and purpose.
Here are some things to think about before making that choice:
Picture
SIZE + AVAILABLE SPACE
Even as professional designers, we have often been known to physically cut out tiny scale replica white paper sofa plans to move them around a scaled room plan. There is nothing to say that someone new to this cannot do exactly the same thing, but full scale. Join large sheets of paper together and create a mock up plan of the size of sofa you think you want to buy, 2 Seater, 3 Seater, L-Shaped etc. Or simply mark the shape out in the room so that you get a better feel for how it will sit within the space you have.

Once you know what’s possible in terms of space, you can start to choose or design your sofa. Our Design Your Own options from Bolia allows you to create a sofa very unique to you.

TOP TIP - just because the sofa fits in your room, you must remember to measure the access route to include doorways, hallway, corners for delivery including heights.
Picture
STYLE + FUNCTION
Whether you’re decorating an apartment or a country house, you should consider some style options, as well as the functions of the room in question. If your style preference is more minimal, you may wish to choose from our contemporary or designer pieces from both Bolia and Ferm LIVING. If you have a more organic sofa shape in mind, the Rico Sofa from Ferm LIVING is a stunning product. If you are looking to combine timber legs or arms, then Bolia would be a very good option within the Design Your Own range..

TOP TIP - if a large sofa has a low back height, or is low to the ground with minimal legs it will appear smaller than a sofa which is solid to the floor.  The advantage being that the room will appear larger.
FILLING + COMFORT
The filling for your sofa seat and back will influence the comfort and longevity of your purchase, so it’s worth choosing carefully. Foam is a very common filling due to the firmness and comfort it provides and comes in different densities.  It is worth noting that the higher the density, the better the sofa will retain its shape over time. All new foam will lose around 15% of its firmness over the first 6 months of use before it fully stabilises. This means a sofa might have a firmer seat when it first arrives but will soften over the first few months.

TOP TIP - we always take into consideration the comfort of our sofa's and chairs and forms part of our selection process.  scandibox has therefore done the hard work for you already and selected Luxe filling.

LIGHTING

Used well, lighting can make a significant contribution to the look of your home. Bad lighting can make a beautifully furnished room appear dull, grey and uninviting, but good lighting can add excitement, drama and warmth to even the most ordinary of interiors. Our Lighting Buying Guide is designed to give you an overview of how to choose the best lighting for your space and to help you feel confident in your choices.

Since the scandibøx online store has been put togther 'defined by the way we live', we think it most appropriate to outline room by room, space by space
the best ways of using lighting in these areas and offer a few tips and guidelines to help give you the confidence before you buy.
HALLWAY
We often feel the hallway is one of the most forgotten areas of the home, and yet in many ways it is the most important. Walking into a well lit, atmospheric hallway after a long hard day at work helps get your evening off to a very good start. It sets the tone for the rest of your home and has the power to alter your mood and bring a sense of wellbeing if you get it right.

A single, well chosen pendant light might be all you need if the space is small, perhaps backed up with a table lamp, or even loop a second flex across the ceiling and hang a second light from a ceiling hook. Subsidiary lights are a good idea near coat racks and mirrors.  We like to create a little drama in the hallway, something to make a statement - it is after all the first and last space you see when you arrive at or leave your home. Choose something memorable, inviting to give you a warming glow.

LIVING
Often an extension of the hallway, the living area is probably the largest area in your home where you can be expressive and create a layering effect of lighting levels. It is a good idea to have adaptable lighting in the living room, as it is used for a variety of different functions. Good hardwired light with a dimmable function allows you to vary the amount of background light, and then adding a floor lamp next to armchairs, or low hanging pendant lights over a coffee table can give you more directed light at the same time as creating a beautiful ambient glow. The living room is also a great place for decorative touches, which is where a unique lamp can really stand out.

DINING
Flexibility is the most important thing to remember when lighting a dining area space. A dimmer switch enables the mood of the room to be varied for dinner parties or social gatherings. But not all the lighting needs to be electric, a lower layer level of candle light can be the finishing touch many electrical lights can't quite achieve.

The main light should be concentrated on the table. Pendant lights are perfect for this. For a rectangular dining table, more than one pendant light will be necessary. Cluster lights are fabulous over dining tables, especially cascading lights displayed at different heights.  If using a chandelier make sure it doesnt appear too heavy or could feel a little oppressive for your diners.  Smoked glass globes look amazing at different heights and sizes and given the translucency of the shades, you can get away with a greater volume for intense drama.

KITCHEN
Pendant lights with a large shade can provide a good source of general light for the kitchen, especially over a breakfast table. Or perhaps a series of smaller pendants positioned over a breakfast bar or island unit will help to zone the different activities of the kitchen.  Other than concealing strip lights with warm-hued bulbs beneath cabinet overhangs to create an evening glow, a forgotten light source in the form of wall lights can be used in the kitchen, especially where contemporary glazed structures form part of the space.

BEDROOM
As with the dining area, it is good to consider lighting layers to give you the most flexible lighting solutions both by night and day. Lighting for the bedside table can add a comforting glow to the room, as well as a touch of style. But this doesnt necessarily need to be table lights, the same affect can be achieved with pendants or wall lights. A floor lamp next to a lovely bedroom chair, high enough to illuminate the page of your book, can create a special reading place when you want a quiet moment.

OUTDOOR
Illuminating the exterior of your house, whether with electric, torch or candle, is perhaps one of the most dramatic and equally satisfying things you can do to create a huge impact with the least amount of effort A truly Scandinavian thing to do, whether it be as the nights start to drawer in during the autumn months or mid summer festivities, a burning torch, candle or even fire pit brings to most wonderful source of light in our opinion cannot be bettered. Our design team have sourced the most fabulous series of 'outdoor flames' that really are worth a look.
TOP TIP - whatever area you are choosing to light, if you have different light sources make sure you purchase the same colour temperature (colour the light source appears) to achieve a coherent look.

RUGS

A beautiful rug can be used to zone, tie together or divide a space. It can be used to compliment, contrast and coordinate with your environment. As a purely aesthetic piece, a rug can create a striking visual statement, either in its own right or as a means of drawing attention to or marking out a particular area in the room. A colourful woven rug softens the feel of an interior, enlivens an otherwise neutral interior palette, and adds a touch of luxury to a bare wooden floor.

A rug is perhaps one of the most visually impactful items you can bring into your home, relatively inexpensively, yet has the ability to transform a space.
Coordinate with other soft furnishings and suddenly you have a completed concept for any room.
CHOOSING A RUG
There are a number of things to consider when choosing which rug is best, from colour to how much of the room you want to fill.
Here’s our list of things to take into account;

 Size + Layout
Do you want to fill the floor or define or zone a space within it? A hallway for example can look smaller if the rug within it fills up to the skirting boards.
Meanwhile, an open-plan living room / dining area can be subtly divided with different designs or textures of rug. These should tone in with or compliment one another so they don’t battle for attention, but yet clearly define a marked area.

If the rug is going underneath a dining table, coffee table or other furniture, you’ll want to make sure that the perimeter of the rug exceeds those of the items in such a way that it does not get lost. You should also consider the shape of the rug. Rectinlinear rugs are a popular choice, but a large square rug might suit your space better as might a circular rug for more informal seating areas.

Style + Design
Our contemporary rugs come in a variation of shape, colour, and material and many of these pieces are sourced with the help of our knowledgeable designers. Rugs are an integral part of Scandinavian Design and help to soften or brighten a room.  Categorising by how the rugs are made, gives us;
Flat Woven - these rugs can be formed of a mix of materials, usually a cotton/wool blend. They're created via a more traditional loom-weaving technique.  Larger scale, regular patterns such as stripes or geometricsusually feature on flat-woven rug's as do a mix of colours.
Hand Tufted - the pile of these rugs is created by tufts of thread being pushed through a pre-formed backing and made by hand.  Durable and incredibly hard wearing over time., these hand tufted rugs are soft under the feet, and their smooth texture provides a good surface for complex patterns.
Hand Knotted - the pile of these rugs is made from individual threads being twisted around the warp.  Highly durable and beautiful rugs, these are usually textured, dense, and plain in colour. As the most labour-intensive of all types, handknotted rugs tend to be towards the luxurious end of the market.

ACCENTS + OBJECTS

Our homes are true reflections of us.  They are sincere, personal places in which we can be ourselves.  And there is no better way of feeling a connection
with place than to fill our surroundings with products of joy, objects of pleasure, things of desire, to create a truly wonderful feeling of home.
ACCENT CHAIRS
One of the most rewarding aspects about design is that there are areas where form and function really can be balanced in equal measure. A well designed accent chair has the ability to stand alone as a statement piece, while also being functional.  It provides the perfect excuse to create a self indulgent corner, a place to retreat to, a place to find solace and harmony.

We have carefully curated a number of pieces, some more indulgent than others, but all give us that important feeling of pride and ownership. They are the kind of pieces that work perfectly whether part of a seating arrangement, or set apart.
Picture
If set apart and in their own zone, the possibilities are almost limitless. Considerations for this are better determined predominantly by use. Is this for a reading corner, a place to listen to music, part of a study or home office, a place to relax, unwind or simply be? High back chairs, preferably with a swivel, are better suited in studies as they offer some privacy, a place to take a moment out from demanding mental activity, whilst still allowing the mind to stay somewhat ‘in the zone’. Swivel chairs allow us to turn our backs on our work for a few moments, offer a change of scene without leaving a room. For pure relaxation and restful lounging, low and fixed chairs are better, they give a sense of stability, a place to retreat within an area of the home pre determined to aid a feeling of calm.  Orientation is key, as are materials and accompaniments such as small occasional tables, lamps whether table or floor. It is important to surround ourselves with items of comfort to induce the ease of whiling away time in our perfectly self created and favourite place to be.

It is perhaps more difficult to combine an accent chair within a room with other seating. As a general rule, coordinating fabrics and materials have less impact or sense of ‘change’ within a room, than a contrasting material or striking statement fabric would. The decision is down to largely use again, but also one of design, influence and aesthetic. In most of the projects we do, combining an accent chair into a lounge seating arrangement is almost always done as a statement. The accent chair is quite often the talk of the room, perfectly positioned to stand out, rather than blend in and has the uncanny ability to be both the seat people fight to sit in, and the seat they rarely stay in and never anywhere in-between. A statement chair is always special, and if we get it right, it is too special to ever be categorised as ‘everyday’.

SOFT FURNISHINGS
We tend to choose soft furnishings to build colour stories, personality, or change the mood of a space simply, quickly and without huge expense. It is one of the greatest tricks of the trade and is the one area we never tire of. Whether choosing throws, blankets or cushions, in textured fabrics or plain, selecting linens on balmy summer evenings or beautifully luxurious faux furs on chilly winter nights, soft furnishings have the power to completely transform our spaces.

The materials we choose varies depending on the look and feel we want to achieve as well as the time of year and intended use. From super soft merino wool, simple woven cotton, mohair, linens or furs, a level of luxuriousness can be created using all of these.  Choice of colour is perhaps the area most people struggle with.  As a general rule, if trying to create a look of pure sophistication and traditional Scandinavian style, ‘tone on tone’ is ultimately the way of the professionals. This means selecting a colour, whether neutral or a beautiful what we call, “Danish Blue”, start with a mid tone, then layer the soft furnishings with darker and lighter versions of the same or similar tone.  This creates a considered look, and is what we do often for architectural shoots where we want a sophisticated, simple and timeless look. On the flip side, we might want to introduce a pop of colour into a more neutral backdrop to make a bold or dramatic statement. This also enables the space to be adapted to the seasons, or follow a particular trend. Either way creates amazing results and is completely personalised to you.

Even some professional designers can struggle with colour at times, but it is nothing to be frightened of and once practiced it becomes an enjoyable and quick way to make a huge difference to any room.

TOP TIP - even for a neutral look room, using tone on tone need not appear bland.  If concerned the colours chosen are too similar, add a touch of difference using texture. This really brings a space to life and introduces an added dimension of interest in a subtle but very Scandinavian way.
UPHOLSTERY
Whether choosing upholstery for an elegant occasional chair, a comfortable family sofa, upholstery fabric for a luxury bed, ottoman or even a dining chair, choosing the right fabric to suit our needs and home can be difficult.

Key considerations are similar to soft furnishings, although for upholstery fabrics the stakes can be even higher.  There is often more expense involved, the products are usually purchased with longevity in mind and so for both of these considerations choosing the right colour, tone and texture is something we feel pressure to get right.

For the professionals, unless we know a client is planning to redecorate in a year or two, we are furnishing for a less often used room or space, we are creating a deliberate accent with an occasional piece of furniture or accent item or the client has a specific idea in mind, choosing neutral for ‘high ticket items’ is always the best consideration. Once again, using textured fabrics to lift the look is something we often do.  Boucle, in a cotton and wool blend, has a textural quality perfect for adding interest and accents and has a soft and luxurious feel. Linen, probably best associated with Scandinavian living, is a wonderfully sustainable product, soft, durable and adaptable to many forms. Velvet, synonymous with luxury and opulence has a beautiful feel, especially when mixed with mohair for the most sumptuous, deep pile finish.  Felted wool, a flat pile wool most suited to sofas when seeking a cool and contemporary look and cotton, which comes in many forms such as brushed, woven, or blended and is most suitable for upholstery of most kinds.

Another consideration is the application for the fabric. The Martindale test is designed to indicate how much wear and tear a fabric can withstand before there might be a change in its appearance or the fibres begin to break down. These are referred to as ‘rubs’. There are certain golden rules to consider; 30,000 rubs or more is suitable for all domestic use seating, even for the busiest of households. 10,000 rubs or less is suited to decorative items such as cushions only. 15,000 rubs is good for occasional use furniture or just over for everyday use furniture but not heavy use.

Leather and faux leather is often associated with very luxury and high value items, but there are some great products we have from Bolia for example where their beautiful aniline leather finishes are hardly different in cost than their quality fabrics.

There are, of course, as with all fabrics, different grades of leathers we should be aware of. Aniline is by far the most luxurious form of leather provided. Renowned for its beautifully soft texture and natural finish, aniline retains the wonderful grain with a slightly matt, non buffed appearance.  Both Bolia and Ferm LIVING offer the most wonderful, earthy and delicate colours we have found. This results in the look of pure luxury where the grain is perfectly preserved. We then have full grain leather, or perhaps more commonly referred to as “hide”. This leather is the most durable leather, displaying natural grain from the outer hide. Lastly there is natural grain, which is as the name suggests, a natural, non corrected finish which, as with hides, includes the original natural blemishes, follicles or damage lending the leather to a truly authentic texture.

TOP TIP - beautifully elegant and neutral seating can easily be accented with statement cushions and throws.  In addition to this, uniquely shaped, or sculpturally formed furniture pieces often look amazing in bold statement fabrics and can be treated as pieces of art within an otherwise simple, almost gallery like space.

STORAGE
One of the staples of Scandinavian living. Storage should be considered as one of the most important elements when designing a home. It can act as a visually striking accent or centrepiece, have a dual use as part of a home office system or drinks unit, offer practical and often clever solutions as well as being somewhere to arrange all of the decorative objects we choose to have around us to make us feel at home.

As with most things in the design arena, there are of course many things to consider when purchasing a storage range. Should it be built in or free standing? What items are to be hidden, and which should be on display? Are there items required constantly, or those for occasional use or use only on a rainy day?  Storage to add personality and style, or storage to become a neutral backdrop to a simple and  minimal home?

Most of the storage Scandibøx have selected are items of beauty, places to display interesting things and house our most stylish and often most personal possessions. Carefully located, storage in the form of sideboards, credenzas, dressers and cabinets, can add visual interest to a room, improving proportions and aiding circulation and zoning.

Our two most inspiring brands, when it comes to beautifully designed and well crafted furniture, are Ferm LIVING and Bolia. They typify the best of Danish design and bring us a range of storage solutions both practical and stylish we can be proud to own.

OBJECTS + ACCESSORIES
This is where choice is limitless, personal and every bit about what makes a house a home. A buying guide for ‘objects’ is really not a buying guide at all, it is about a set of considerations, thoughts, noteworthy anecdotes and absolutely nothing more. Nor should it be.

Running central to our brand, is the theme that surrounding ourselves with all that makes us happy, pieces that have meaning or bring us comfort, memory or tell our story by focusing on what we value, enables us to create our best spaces.

Simplicity and function, items that make life easier, products with dual purpose that are both practical and beautiful, is the focus we need when considering the smaller items we need and want in our homes.  Why purchase two products, for two reasons, when there are clever products that combine both. The Ferm LIVING planters spring to mind.  They can be used for plants, or housing books, magazines, as a kitchen handy or even a drinks tidy. We have so many products available here, that what appeals to some of us might not appeal to others.

So lets go ahead, have a browse, take our time, remember the senses, discover our voice and express our individual sense of self.
