A combined century of core team experience, our growing hub combines with an ever expanding network of creatives, technologists and influencers.

OUR STORY

“Deeply inspired by events which took place in 2012, I have been fortunate enough to gradually carve out a unique and personal, yet hopefully generically accepted, even more focused way of designing. I call it my “slow living” era. That doesn’t necessarily mean a slower pace of life (although at times it can be) but does mean slowing the mind down for long enough to fully observe, to consider all of the detail, in every form, sense and vision. It’s ‘mindfulness for design’. An experiential way of designing, drawing inspiration from all areas of life and which are not just design led, but the everyday things and the exceptional, making room for all of these in the environments we create. It is design which is very intentional, very considered, design that matters and makes a difference by bringing together normal and special in one place, yet looks natural and honest and unconsciously designed. Four dimensional thinking which offers a unique insight into the way we all live.

​Seven years ago I sustained a life changing injury. I couldn’t walk and talk at the same time but was determined to attain my former high functioning abilities and defied the odds to stand here today 95% back to my former self. The 5% I lost, I gained ten fold in life experience and the kind of determination I thought at times almost impossible. I learnt even more about life, what makes people tick, what motivates people, what inspires people, what soothes and relaxes people, the things people want and why they want them.  I gained an insight into a world I had never previously slowed down for long enough to fully understand.

​What happened to me doesn’t define me, instead it makes me a better designer. It taught me to design even more intuitively and always to design from the soul. It taught me to surround myself with the very best people at what they do, the best minds, the best creatives, the best organisers, advisors and mentors - because life is short and it shouldn’t be spent battling against the odds or trying to make people something they are not.  And, as Einstein famously said;

​“Everybody is a genius.  But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid”.

It has never been my ambition to build an empire, instead a small elite group of like minded individuals who all possess something unique to them. I am proud of the team we now are, and each and every one of us has our own life experience which makes us who we have become. A proven history, a proud culture, an amazing team. The time is now right to give back a little, to offer an insight into the wonderful world of design, whether seeking products to help rest or revive, to relax or rejoice, with friends and family or self indulgently alone. Surrounding ourselves with things we love, has the ability to change our moods, to comfort and protect us and to improve our daily lives both functionally and emotionally. Our homes have never been so important, they provide us with shelter, not just from the elements but from the noise and chaos of the ‘outside world’.  If we focus on all that we value and surround ourselves with meaning, there is to us, simply no better place to be.”

OUR STUDIO + PHILOSOPHY

Functioning as a live Studio, Gothic Place combines architectural design, workshop  demonstration*, experiential opportunities*, event space and office all under one roof. Our Design Studio conceives interiors for luxury residences, retail experiences and hospitality for UK and International clients.  Founded in 2000 as a Design and Lifestyle Consultancy, a strapline most people didn’t understand back then. Now the phrase has become well used, possibly by some who are still learning how to use it. But the term “lifestyle” today is synonymous with good design, encompassing all aspects of design to reflect the way people live. It has been our absolute pleasure to work on some of the projects we have been fortunate enough to have passed our way.  And whilst some of those have been challenging and at times hard, they became vessels to help bring us to where we are today.
​Almost 20 years on, our evolution has seen us forming into a group of like minded companies and creative souls. Scandibøx has been born through our evolving and changing path. Always an advocate of the saying “less is more” and always having designed that way, finding the end result always so much more considered, more coherent, more inclusive than shoving lots of meaningless gestures into an environment where the meaning is ultimately lost, we feel our path has been a progressive one.
We want to cater to almost everyone, our advice though would be to purchase the highest quality product you can afford.  Cynics might suggest this is our ploy to encourage a greater spend, or improve our sales.  On the contrary because our advice would also be to ask yourselves, ‘will this item improve my life, do I need it, am I going to increase an already cluttered home’.  Because that too is the scandi ethos, have products around you that make you feel good, improve your life from a practical aspect, look beautiful or all three.

Scandinavian design is about so much more than a design trend, it is about a way of life. Founded in the 1930’s by the great masters of design, Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen, Hans J Wegner, their influences can still be seen today. But it is our aim to curate the essence of, the values of, the quality of these masters without replication or hefty price. As much as we might all like to have Aalto or Jacobsen in our front rooms, we simply can’t all afford to. But compromising on quality would be the antithesis of the scandi ethos and would fly in the face of how Scandibøx came about. It is our aim to bring to you beautiful but also functional, quality products.  Some of our products are pricey because the price represents the time, the craftsmanship, the quality or rarity of materials used, but for others the price is modest. This doesn’t mean the quality is any less impressive, it usually just means more of the products can be manufactured perhaps quicker, with materials easier to come by.

Having built our foundation on this philosophy, we have curated a collection of products that one way or another, help improve our lives. Our intension is to help guide rather than tell, to give the confidence to explore the philosophy and curate your own collections for you to enjoy. A way of living, ultimately free from the demands of leading a life most retailers have told us we want.

OUR SELECTIONS

 We are so very selective when it comes to choosing which brands to work with.  But we make no excuses for that, we’ve been around long enough to know exactly what choices to make - and which ones not to.  And, whilst we very rarely follow rules or agenda, when it comes to helping our clients to design their homes, we do make conscious choices about who and which brands we share our time with.  Our homes should be happy places, filled with beauty, productivity and love.  And so it is, that we have developed our own criteria, a base line of needs we expect our suppliers to possess, to a greater or lesser extent, in one way or another.  Not rules, but values.  A code of ethics we consider carefully and would never ignore. 

 
MATTER
Our values are a huge part of who we are and how we came together.  It therefore matters to us if what we believe in matters to those around us.  We talk to makers, we share ideas, we learn about their products, processes and possibilities.  We take benefit from experiencing the products they provide first hand, so that in turn we can pass to our clients, online or commissioned and ultimately make authentic choices about their worth.

The brand partners we choose all share a sense of combined philosophy, a design integrity that seems almost unique to our Nordic roots.  Each brand combines beauty with function, craftsmanship with sustainability, cutting edge design with heritage – always with the aim to produce products of purpose and meaning to increase our quality of life.

SOUL
Soul is at the heart of everything we do.  Good design, for good designers, is throwing away the rule book and designing what feels right.  It is not to follow a formulaic agenda, or to mold, or place items in our homes because the latest trend tells us to.  We design for what we need, for the way we need to live. When we pursue our passions and commit to understanding what really brings us pleasure daily, we start to unfold the purest parts of ourselves and find, for most of us, that greatest pleasure comes from simplicity.  By focusing on what nourishes our soul, we bring great joy to our lives and an abundance of life to our homes.

We like to think we are a friendly bunch, we have fika on Fridays and Nespresso coffee the whole week through.  We’re passionate about what we do, whether we are designing, testing products or speaking with customers, collaborators or colleagues. Our standards are high, our integrity vital but we always work together as part of a supportive team.
 
Scandibøx is the home of carefully curated products and it is our job, collectively, to ensure our customers and followers share our knowledge too.  

PART TIME CUSTOMER SERVICES EXECUTIVE
We’re looking for a Customer Services Executive supporting our customers in UK and Ireland. Responsibilities will include pre-sale and a Consultative approach to help Customers in making the right choices, offering product information, liaising with our manufacturers and makers, and reporting to our Studio Manager.
 

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS GRADUATE
A rare opportunity has arisen for an ambitious, efficient and articulate Junior Marketing Graduate to join the Scandibøx team.  Forming part of the wider creative team, with a meticulous eye for detail and a strong understanding of the English language, the Junior Marketing Graduate will be responsible for writing engaging, accurate and consumer-focused content to help grow our brand. Previous experience is not essential although enthusiasm for design, lifestyle and home products would be important.
